JWS Consulting is a division of Johnson Winter & Slattery providing commercial consulting services.
We are engaged by major Australian and international corporations as legal counsel on their business activities, disputes and most challenging matters.
Established in 1993 by Tony Johnson, Nigel Winter and Peter Slattery as a boutique corporate firm, JWS grew rapidly to become a leading independent Australian firm.
The quality of our legal advice and service to clients is recognised through independent industry recognition and direct client feedback.

JWS supports a number of community initiatives and not for profit organisations across Australia through pro bono legal work, charitable donations and sponsorships.
In 2018, we celebrated 25 years of long-lasting relationships with our valued clients.
Our lawyers thrive in an open environment with few internal administrative boundaries. The absence of formalised teams means that junior lawyers get to work alongside different specialists right across the firm. And our low leverage structure means that this is normally with partners. This invaluable on the job learning is supported by structured mentoring and professional development programs. So if you want to be part of a firm with a reputation of providing outstanding legal advice to the best in business, we want to hear from you.

Whether you’re a lawyer or support professional, at JWS you become a valued part of a talented team taking on some of the most challenging and rewarding legal work in Australia.
We’re a highly professional and focused firm, committed to delivering superior service to our clients and each other. While integrity, accountability and high performance are expected, staff notice the friendly, open and collaborative atmosphere in all of our offices. From the moment people join the firm they feel part of a truly supportive team where their contribution is valued and efforts are rewarded.
We recognise that superior outcomes are achieved on strategic and complex matters through the hands-on involvement of expert senior lawyers. We therefore maintain a higher ratio of partners to lawyers than our rivals, and focus on assignments suited to this structure. This means graduates and young lawyers are involved in major matters right from the start. They work directly alongside partners and clients, providing unique development opportunities and the chance to develop strong client relationships early on in their careers.
Comparatively we have a relatively flat internal structure with no fixed work groups. This is to ensure the best people and the right resources are pulled together on each assignment, regardless of their primary area of practice or location. Graduates and lawyers are not confined to practice areas, providing variety of work and broad experience gained from working across all practice areas with lawyers from each office.
As a commercial law firm we are still required to record our time and bill our clients, but we choose not to set individual or group billable hour budgets. This means that all our lawyers can focus on producing excellent work, developing their skills and working together without undue pressure of the burden of budgets.
From clerkship right through to partner, we encourage and support all our lawyers to proactively develop and manage their careers. Lawyers are not pigeon-holed in the early stage of their careers, allowing them to work across a variety of practices and pursue their interests as they develop.
While on-the-job training is essential for career development, this is supplemented by a structured professional development program for practitioners at all levels. Refer to the diagram below for career steps and development programs at JWS.

In Sydney, we do things differently! JWS offers internship opportunities to students in their last two years of Law School.
Our interns typically work full time during the holidays, similar to a ‘summer clerkship’, but also on a part time basis during the academic term. This provides an opportunity for you to play an ongoing role in complex transactions and disputes.
Over the summer months we look forward to our interns working with us on a full time basis, however we can be flexible if needed. We know it is a busy time of the year for travel and international exchanges and we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities if they arise.
As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work in a select practice group or gain experience across all of our practice areas. JWS is an exceptional place to begin your career, build relationships with some of Australia’s most successful companies whilst being mentored and taught by some of Australia’s best lawyers.
