Richard St John

Special Counsel
Richard has held high level legal and executive roles in both the public and private sectors, including thirteen years as General Counsel to BHP. Earlier, he held a number of positions with the Australian Government including Deputy Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department, senior positions with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Legal Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Washington and Secretary of the Royal Commission on Australia's Security and Intelligence Agencies. More recently, Richard served as Secretary (principal executive) of the HIH Royal Commission.

He is also the Convenor of the Corporations and Markets Advisory Committee which provides advice to the Commonwealth Government.

Building on a strong legal background, including in corporations and competition law, Richard moved into broader commercial and governmental areas. He has had extensive experience in corporate governance, commercial and legal affairs, business regulation, public administration, policy development and strategic guidance.

With the expertise gained in his roles with BHP and the HIH Royal Commission, Richard is able to provide advice to corporate clients looking to strike an appropriate balance in their approach to corporate governance.
